Cornea & Refractive Surgery

The cornea is the outer transparent layer of the eye. This service also includes treatment solutions for refractive errors viz nearsightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism (cylinder power). We have a Cornea Specialist who is expertly trained to handle various diseases of the cornea like:

  • Keratoconus: An eye disease of the cornea in which the cornea becomes thin and gradually begins to bulge out into a cone like shape.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome:In this eye condition, also called as Keratitis Sicca, there is dryness and inflammation of the cornea causing red eyes, watering of eyes, scratchy eyes or even blurred vision.
  • Corneal Ulcer: Also called as Ulcerative keratitis, an open sore is formed on the cornea in this serious eye problem
  • Pterygium: A pterygium is a pinkish triangular growth of tissue on the outer surface of your eye.
  • Cataract: This is the most common eye condition causing blurry vision. It occurs due to clouding of the natural lens of the eye.
  • Fuch’s dystrophy, Keratoconjunctivitis, Fungal keratitis, Corneal neovascularization, Bullous keratopathy, Lattice corneal dystrophy, Corneal abrasion etc. are some of the other eye diseases of the cornea that our eye specialists are equipped to handle.

Our Cornea specialist routinely performs a number of eye surgeries and procedures of the cornea like:

Technology
Corneal Topographer from Japan: A corneal topographer provides a computerised 3D map of the cornea. These fine details about the surface of your cornea help to diagnose and monitor any changes to the shape and integrity of the cornea. This is a non-invasive test which is painless. These tests are also advised before planning cornea surgeries, to evaluate scratches on your cornea, before fitting contact lenses and before planning laser eye surgeries.

Slit lamp from TopCon, Japan: A slit lamp is used with a microscope to study the abnormalities of the front portion of the eye including eye lids, eyelashes, lens, conjunctiva (outermost transparent layer of eye), cornea and iris (coloured portion of the eye). This is usually the first examination that is done by a cornea specialist. Other tests may be advised for more detailed information if required.
Ultrasound Biometry from Quantel, France: This device is used to perform Pachymetry. In pachymetry, the thickness of your cornea can be measured. This is useful before planning refractive surgery to correct spectacle powers and to monitor the progress of keratoconus.
