The retina, colloquially called as the ‘curtain of the eye’ is the tissue in our eye that converts the images which we see into nerve signals so that our brain can understand what we are seeing. At Drishti Eye Care, we have eye doctors who have specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous humour (fluid in the inner chamber of the eye).

We are equipped to deal with a number of diseases affecting the retina:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy: People with diabetes are at risk of this complication where there is damage to the blood vessels of the retina due to the high blood sugar levels.
  • Age related macular degeneration or ARMD: This is another eye condition where a portion of the retina called the macula gets damaged especially in people over 60 years of age.
  • Macular Hole: This is a small break that can occur in the macula which is the centre of the retina.
  • Various types of Vascular Occlusions: People with long standing diabetes and hypertension are prone to occlusions of the small vessels of the retina. These need to be detected early and treated vigorously.
  • Retinoblastoma: It is a rare eye cancer that begins in the retina and is commonly seen in children.
  • Coat’s disease, hypertensive retinopathy, lattice degeneration, etc. are certain other conditions which are handled by our vitreo retinal surgeon at Drishti Eye Care, Mulund.

  • For a large number of retinal problems a variety of intravitreal injections are adviced for fast recovery of the problems.

Technology
Fundus Camera from Canon, USA: A fundus camera helps to document photos of the. These colour photographs help document the changes when your retina is diseased and monitor the progress of your retina treatment.

This fundus camera is also useful for a test called Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA). Just like an angiography of your heart helps study the blood supply to your heart, this test helps study the blood circulation of the inner surface of your eye by using a dye called Fluorescein to highlight the blood vessels of your eye.

These are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

 



Optical Coherence Tomographer from Zeiss, Germany: This helps your retina specialist at Drishti Eye Care, Mulund to study each layer of your retina and measure its thickness. They also provide crucial information which helps in planning the treatment of retina diseases like diabetic eye disease, age related macular degeneration and glaucoma. This advanced machine is capable of taking 27,000 axial scans of the eye per second to give a very high resolution picture of the minute structures of the eye.
Perimeter from Haag Streit, USA: This is used to examine your field of vision. Certain diseases of the retina reduce your central and or peripheral field of vision. This test helps your retina eye doctor to detect the extent of damage in diseases like macular degeneration, brain tumours, strokes and also to detect blind spots in your vision.


Slit Lamp from TopCon, Japan: A slit lamp is good tool to identify diseases affecting the retina and it’s blood vessels etc. like diabetic retinopathy, Fuchs' dystrophy, retinal detachment and macular degeneration. Your retina specialist will put in eye drops that will dilate your pupils. This helps your retina eye doctor to visualize the back of the eye. This is the most basic machine for check up of almost all structures of the eye.

 

Indirect Ophthalmoscope from Heine, Germany: This instrument helps your retina specialist get a wide view of the inside of your eye, even if your lens is clouded due to cataract. This gives us a view of the periphery of the retina where some diseases may be lurking. It is also used to deliver laser energy to the periphery of the retina in diseases like diabetic retinopathy, ischaemic occlusions and various tears and degenerations of the retina.

 



Ultrasound Biometry from Quantel, France: This device helps perform A Scan in which ultrasound waves are used to obtain a picture of the inside of the eye. It measures the axial length of the eye even in advanced cataracts using ultrasound waves.
